Monteverde
was founded as a religiously motivated community.
The founding families intended Monteverde to
be a community that seeks the good in everyone
and to live in such a way that might naturally
lead to a more peaceful world.
The center
of the Friends’ community was, and still
is, an un-programmed Friends Meeting. Meetings
for worship are conducted on the principle of
silent, personal communion with God or the Divine
Spirit, without a hired minister, where each
person may, when moved to do so, stand and share
his or her message with the group.
Today, Monteverde
Friends still bears witness to the Quaker peace
testimony. Decision-making by consensus, deep
environmental concerns, and strong efforts towards
the acceptance of all people are also integral
aspects of the Monteverde Friends community.
The Quaker testimony against the abuse of alcohol,
tobacco, narcotics and other harmful substances
is also maintained.
The growth
and development of the tourist industry challenges
the Quakers’ ability to live quiet lives
committed to simplicity and non-materialistic
rural living. Yet, the presence of the ideals
held by the original settlers still pervades,
despite the pressures of change.
