La clara mañana nos dio una impresionante vista panorámica. Podíamos ver el Océano Atlántico al norte, y, algunos pensaron, el Pacífico al sur. On April 28, at approximately 6:00 a.m., eleven ninth- and tenth-graders, two fathers, and two teachers reached the summit of Costa Rica’s tallest peak, Chirripó. The crisp, clear morning gave us a breathtaking panoramic view. We could see the Atlantic Ocean to the north, and, some thought, the Pacific to the south. The view’s grandeur was outdone only by the momentous sense of exhilaration and accomplishment felt by all.

My muscles scream with exhaustion and the hill seems to stretch endlessly out and up in front of me. I curse myself for choosing to do this extra hike. We’d already climbed to the top of Chirripó, and now I choose to climb up almost as high a second time!

Este semestre, la clase de séptimo y octavo trabajaron mejorando la tierra del jardín por medio de abono orgánico y paleando y formando los surcos. Hemos podido mejorar la tierra en la mayoría de la huerta y hemos plantado culantro, rábano, albahaca, espinaca, cebolla, zanahoria, lechuga y repollo. El minicurso de “jardinear” de los niños menores también ha podido usar el jardín, y han plantado zanahoria, lechuga y ajo.

This semester, the seventh and eighth grade worked on improving the soil in the garden with compost and by re-digging and forming the beds. We have been able to improve the soil in most of the garden, and have planted cilantro, radishes, basil, spinach, onions, carrots, lettuce, and cabbage. The younger students’ gardening minicourse has also been able to use the garden, and they have planted carrots, lettuce, and garlic.

The butterflies seemed undisturbed by the cheery calls of the two-footed visitors to their greenhouse. The students discovered that some butterflies would land on their red, pink, orange, and purple T-shirts. Standing still, or moving slowly, gave butterflies an improved landing zone.

El lunes 25 de febrero, dieciséis viajeros de Monteverde desembarcaron al pueblo emberá de La Chunga en Panamá. Se trataba de once estudiantes de undécimo y duodécimo de la Escuela de los Amigos, acompañados por Patricia Ortiz, padres Katy Van Dusen y Frank Joyce, y maestros Heather Gosse y Jonathan Ogle. Los Emberá los recibieron con sonrisas, música y baile. Después, según Bobby Leonard, “Los niños nos tomaron de la mano y nos llevaron hasta el pueblo por un sendero bordeado de árboles.”
Anjali Pati describe que sus anfitriones “viven completamente rodeados de la naturaleza.” Las casas de La Chunga tienen techos de palma y son elevadas. Los Emberá cultivan plantas típicas de los neotrópicos: piña, cassava, cacao, tomate, frijol, aguacate, achiote, borojó, chile, maíz, y varias palmas, especialmente la palma chunga cuyas fibras son tejidas para hacer cestas.

Una de las cosas que más disfruté en Panamá fue cuando me logró sentir una conexión más allá con los Emberá que una simple visita de una turista. Creo que la simpatía y la confianza que irradiaban los Emberá me hizo sentir tan cómoda con ellos. Me entristecí al salir, por ser tan pronto, pero volver a mi vida diaria en Monteverde fue más fácil de lo que me hubiera gustado.

One of the things I enjoyed most in Panama was when I developed a connection with someone that felt more than just being a tourist in their village. I think it was the friendliness, the trust that these people radiate that made me feel so comfortable with them.
